Practice Letter Matching

Practice Letter Matching at home (5 minutes)

Instructions: For children 2 and older. Start 2 weeks before your next scheduled appointment

  1. Cut 1 HOTV Chart into 4 squares, each containing a letter

  2. Hand the other HOTV chart to your child (not cut up)

  3. Mix up the cut up individual letters and then show them 1 letter. Ask them to point to that corresponding letter.

  4. If they are unsure what you mean by matching, show them. Point to your letter and then point to the matching letter on their chart. Show them how it is the same letter, they are matching.

  5. Encourage your child to also practice matching

  6. Once they can reliably match the letter, have them guess again but further back from you

  7. Additionally, you can cover one eye at a time with a pirate patch or bandage/tissue so they get use to it prior to their eye exam

  8. Repeat once a day until your eye exam and your child should feel more comfortable when we check their vision for their exam!
